The purpose of this research report is to document the spatial and temporal characteristics of tornadoes across the northeastern United States during the 41-year period from 1950 through 1990. Although other studies have examined the spatial and temporal characteristics of tornadoes across the entire United States, only the study of Leathers (Physical Geography, 1993) has concentrated on the tornado climatology of the northeast region. This report presents maps detailing the distribution of tornado occurrences in the Northeast as well as injuries and fatalities associated with tornadic events. In addition, data are presented on the diurnal and annual cycles of tornadic occurrence and on the interannual variability of tornadoes.
