Dreaming of a White Christmas?

white xmas graph

The chances of a white Christmas are good in New Hampshire, but not in New Jersey.

It’s that time of year again. The days are short but lit by twinkle lights and the weather has turned cold, giving hope of a white Christmas. A coastal storm brought several inches of snow to parts of the Northeast the week of December 8th, but will it stick for Jolly Old Saint Nick? It’s still too far away to forecast for the 25th, so we’ll turn to the past. We’ve computed the probabilities (based on 1964-2013) of an inch or more of snow on the ground on December 25th at select cities. Fairbanks, AK, Duluth, MN, and Pinkham Notch, NH, with more than a 90% probability, are your best chances for a white holiday.

Have you made plans for New Year’s Eve? If you’ll be out on the town in Cleveland, OH, Eugene, OR, or Seattle, WA pack an umbrella! Based on 1964-2013 they have more than a 50% probability of having a wet New Year’s Eve. If you don’t want to worry about rain or snow Las Vegas only has a 2% probability of precipitation.
