December temperatures were more than 3°F above normal for most of the region.
Temperatures for the year, though, were near to below normal.
The last month of the year was a warm one in the Northeast, with average temperatures 2 degrees or more above normal. Twenty-six of the 35 airport climate sites ranked this December among their top 20 warmest. The Northeast saw below-normal temperatures seven out of 12 months in 2014, with annual average temperatures within 1 degree of normal at 27 airport climate sites.
Twenty-four airport climate sites were wetter than normal in December, with Kennedy Airport, NY, having its wettest December on record. However, snowfall was noticeably absent during the first month of winter. Twenty airport climate sites ranked this December among their top 20 least snowy, with Huntington, WV, having its least snowy December on record. The year 2014 wrapped up with near- to above-normal precipitation at 34 airport climate sites.
