With the weather warming and days growing longer, many people are eager to start gardening. However, some areas still haven’t made it past their average date of last frost. That date generally ranges from late March to mid-May in the Northeast. Cool temperatures, clear skies, and calm winds can lead to frost, even for those areas that are past their average date. Some of the latest frosts (at the airport climate sites) were in June and even July!
The average date of last frost for the airport climate sites ranges from March 27 at Washington National, DC to May 15 in Caribou, ME. The latest frost was July 1 in Elkins, WV.
You can find a map of the average date of last frost from the National Centers for Environmental Information here. In addition, the National Weather Service issues frost and freeze watches/warnings, so check your local office for more information.
