In an average year, 21 of the 35 major climate sites have had their first frost prior to October 23. But with mild conditions from late September through late October, only eight of the major climate sites have had their first frost so far this year.
First frost (32°F) average date, this year’s date, earliest date, and latest date for sites that typically experience their first frost by October 23.
Of those eight sites, seven had their first frost at least slightly later than usual. For instance, Scranton, PA’s first frost was only three days later than average, but Concord, NH’s first frost was more than two weeks late. Similarly, Portland, ME, has yet to see their first frost, which is overdue by more than two weeks. So far, the only site to see their first frost a little earlier than usual was Elkins, WV, whose first frost was four days ahead of schedule. The remaining 14 sites usually experience their first frost sometime between October 24 and November 24.
