The average date of first measurable snow ranges from late October to late December.

The average date of the first measurable snow (0.1 inches) ranges from late October in Caribou, ME, to late December in Washington, D.C., and Atlantic City, NJ, with the average date for a majority of the major climate sites falling somewhere between mid-November and mid-December. As of November 8, only Binghamton, NY, had seen measurable snow, with 0.1 inches accumulating on November 3.

The average date of the first inch of snow ranges from early November in Caribou, ME, to early January at Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia, PA; Baltimore, MD; and Atlantic City, NJ. so far none of the major climate sites have seen their first inch of snow.

Even though only one major climate site has recorded its first measurable snow, a few other weather observation sites have had measurable snow or even larger amounts. For instance, areas east of Lakes Erie and Ontario saw their first lake-effect snow of the season from November 3 to 4. In addition, some higher elevation sites such as those in New York’s Adirondacks, Vermont’s Green Mountains, and along New Hampshire’s Presidential Range have seen their first snow of the season.

A cooler weather pattern is expected over the next two weeks for many parts of the Northeast according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. While precipitation is favored to be below or near normal during the 6-10 day period, near- to above normal precipitation is favored for the 8-14 day period. Keep an eye on your local National Weather Service forecast to see if the first snowflakes of the season could be in your future.
