April Brings the Showers but Not the Heat

The first two weeks of April featured a temperature rollercoaster that ended with much of the Northeast either on the cool side of normal or near normal. Southeastern West Virginia was the outlier, being as much as 4°F warmer than normal. Average temperatures at the region’s 35 major sites ranged from 3.2°F below normal in Scranton, PA, to 1.1°F above normal in Washington, D.C. While 28 of the sites wrapped up the period with below-normal temperatures, Islip, NY, eked out its 19th warmest first half of April.

April showers were plentiful during the first half of April. While precipitation ranged from 50% of normal in parts of New York and northern New England to over 200% of normal in parts of the Mid-Atlantic, most areas saw near- or above-normal precipitation. At the region’s 35 major sites, precipitation ranged from 68% of normal in Islip, NY, to 233% of normal in Charleston, WV, with 25 sites being wetter than normal. This first half of April ranked among the 20 wettest for seven sites.

Despite the overall wetness, most of the Northeast saw below- or near-normal snowfall during the first two weeks of April. The largest deficits of up to 4 inches were in spots such as western New York and eastern West Virginia, while a few locations like northern New York and central Massachusetts saw a surplus of up to 6 inches. April 1-15 snowfall at the 35 major sites ranged from 2.4 inches below normal in Burlington, VT, and Binghamton, NY, which had its 18th least snowy such period, to 5.9 inches above normal in Worcester, MA, which had its 15th snowiest. Additionally, it was the 18th snowiest April 1-15 period for Caribou, ME.
