A Super Soggy July for Some

July precipitation ranged from less than 25% of normal to over 200% of normal.

There was a wide range of rainfall amounts during July - from less than 25% of normal in places like coastal Maine to over 200% of normal in locations like southern New England and southeastern New York. July rainfall at the Northeast’s 35 major sites ranged from 18% of normal in Portland, ME, to 371% of normal in Bridgeport, CT, with 21 sites being wetter than normal. This July ranked among the 20 driest Julys for three major sites but was among the 20 wettest for 10 others. Additionally, this July ranked among the 20 all-time wettest months on record for three major sites. The wet weather chipped away at drought conditions in multiple locations.

July average temperatures generally ranged from 2°F below normal to 4°F above normal.

Average temperatures for July generally ranged from 2°F cooler than normal in spots like southern New England and southern New York up to 4°F hotter than normal in places like West Virginia, driven in large part by an early-month heat wave. At the Northeast’s 35 major sites, July average temperatures ranged from 1.1°F below normal in Central Park, NY, to 2.6°F above normal in Elkins, WV. Overall, 23 major sites had a hotter-than-normal July, with the month ranking among the 20 hottest Julys on record for 10 of the sites. In fact, July 2026 ranked among the 20 all-time hottest months on record for seven major sites.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, there’s an increased likelihood of above-normal precipitation during August for much of New England and parts of New York. While this would be beneficial for drier spots in northern New Englad like Maine, it would be a continuation of an already soggy pattern in southern New England and southeastern New York. Meanwhile, August is expected to average out to be hotter than normal for southwestern Pennsylvania, sections of Maryland, and most of West Virginia, which are some of the same spots that had the greatest departures above normal during July.
